Traveler Mental Health Struggles

Hey there, fellow traveler!

So, you’ve probably seen me living it up with my girl on social media, hitting up all these cool spots, and you might be thinking to yourself, “Man, Danny’s got it all figured out.” But let me keep it real with you for a sec—things aren’t always as perfect as they look on the internet….

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about mental health lately, especially when it comes to us travelers. You might jet off thousands of miles away, but sometimes those inner demons? They pack their bags and come along for the ride, too. And trust me, as a black American guy living in China, I’ve got my fair share of battles.

It’s like, no matter how great the place is or how amazing that dish in front of me tastes, my mind can zip right back to tough times like they were yesterday. Feeling out of place, dealing with hurt, getting angry, feeling all alone—even in a crowded city. Sounds familiar?

It’s wild, man. You’re in this amazing new country, but then you start asking the big questions. Like, what’s the point of all this if we’re just carrying around pain, anger, and sadness from the past? That’s not the life I signed up for. It sure as hell doesn’t sound like living.

Here’s the thing, though—it doesn’t have to be that way. I’ve been there, wishing I had just talked to someone about what was eating me up inside instead of letting it fester and poison my vibe.

But hey, life’s meant to be enjoyed, right? Especially this once-in-a-lifetime journey of living abroad. Sometimes, being on your own in a new place gives you the space to see how awesome life really can be.

And bro, you’re not alone in this. There’s a whole bunch of us male travelers out here dealing with the same stuff. And guess what? We’ve got communities where guys understand what you’re going through.

Check out these Facebook groups that I’ve been a member of for years now:

  • Passport Bros
  • Lifestyle Boyz
  • Enlightened Western Men
  • Voyatic
  • Travelversity

You might find them just as cool and helpful as I have.

So, that’s the real talk for today. Mental health’s a journey, just like traveling. But it’s one you don’t have to do solo. There’s a brotherhood out there ready to back you up.

Catch you on the flip side,

-Danny
