Recently a guy commented on one of my Facebook posts, accusing me of using “scare tactics” to promote English teaching over tech

He linked a video from a channel that I’m a big fan of

The video talks about how many tech CEOs have the luxury of working from wherever they want, while their employees are typically forced to keeping coming into the office

It seems the guy who linked the video was trying to indicate that I’m incorrect in saying that tech gives false promises of remote work freedom for many people

In reality, he just proved my point

It goes without saying that the leadership of a company has a LOT more power than the employee to dictate their working conditions

Bosses and CEOs are the face of their company, and it often makes more sense for them to be out and about taking promotional pictures and shaking hands than to be sitting in an office

Sitting in an office is what they hire the tech workers for….

Every person I’ve spoken to who has recently got into tech (and I’ve spoken to many, because I like to verify my opinions before I share them) says the same thing – it almost always takes TIME to get the chance to work remotely with tech

A former coworker of mine who went into tech recently said that, just to get his first job, it took “4-5 months of FULL-TIME study (probably something like 6-8 hours MINIMUM a day, 7 days a week), a month of projects and portfolio building, and then a month of working on his resume and sending applications)

That’s over 6 months of full-time preparation work that he likely only had time to do because he was an English teacher, which is a job that gives you lots of free time for stuff like this

In fact, I usually recommend to guys who want to get into tech to first get started with English teaching, and then study for tech jobs in their (usually abundant!) spare time

That way you can start enjoying the overseas lifestyle NOW, rather than years (and thousands of dollars) later

Because the people telling you that you can get remote tech jobs fast and easy are almost certainly BSing you

And that’s the truth. No scare tactics needed
