“They say if you can survive local news, you can survive anything—including your first ESL class.”

Hey

Thinking about teaching English but not sure where to start? Here’s a simple trick: use local news to build fun, conversation-packed lessons—no experience needed.

Here’s how to do it:

1. Pick a Juicy Headline

Grab a local article or news clip—something current like new rules, celeb scandals, or a strange weather event. Real stories beat textbook snoozers every time.

2. Pull Out Key Phrases

Choose 5–7 phrases (like “travel advisory” or “power outage”). Then use:

  • Flashcard Guessing – Let students guess meanings first.

  • Pronunciation Relay – Say it slow, then fast. First one to nail it wins.

3. Role-Play or Debate

Turn the news into a class discussion. Split your students and let them argue both sides—“Was this rule helpful or pointless?” Let them go wild (politely).

Try This:
Pick a 2-minute clip this week. Build a short vocab list and one discussion question. That’s it. Now you’ve got a lesson.

👉 Reply and tell me what headline you’d use. I’ll send you my “news-to-lesson” cheat sheet to get you rolling.
