Something happened recently that reminded me why I’m genuinely grateful I moved overseas to teach English.
A short clip from one of my English-teaching livestreams got posted on Facebook.
In that clip, I shared an opinion about certain negative behaviors within the Black American community that I believe hold us back. It wasn’t sugar-coated, but it also wasn’t extreme. Just things many Black people already talk about privately.
A random viewer completely snapped in the comments.

What stood out to me wasn’t disagreement. I don’t mind disagreement at all.
It was the energy behind it.
Anger.
Projection.
Zero interest in self-reflection.
And it reminded me of something important:
This is the environment a lot of people are still stuck in back home.
When I moved overseas to teach English, I didn’t just change countries.
I changed who I had to be around every day.
I stepped away from constant outrage, endless arguments, and people more interested in fighting ideas than building skills.
Out here, the conversations are different.
People are focused on:
learning
earning
improving their situation
building something real
