Recently I had an American consultation client living in Brazil who asked me about this

He was under the (incorrect) impression that he needed to speak Portuguese in order to teach in Brazilian schools

While speaking the language can definitely make your life more convenient overseas, it’s usually not necessary for teaching

The vast majority of schools want you to speak 100% English with students

Unless you are teaching super young learners, most of your students will have at least a couple years of experience studying English before

Usually they’ll have at least basic English conversation skills, so you won’t need to master their language to communicate effectively with them

Now, you might still want to learn the language for your own enjoyment and lifestyle goals

But rest assured that your chances of getting hired probably won’t decrease if you haven’t picked up any of the local lingo your students speak
