Recently I had a disagreement with a mentor of mine about the importance of knowing history and geography

He was trying to persuade me that an intelligent person should know the history and geography of major countries – regardless of whether you actually want to travel to those countries or not

The reason for this, he said, is because intelligent, educated people will think less of you if they realize that you lack that information

So, to avoid giving a negative impression to smart people, you should have a conversational level of knowledge of world history and geography

Speaking directly towards me, Danny, he was saying that because I work in the travel industry, people will negatively question my qualifications and I might lose business if they realize I don’t know the history and geography of major countries….

…..even if those are countries that I don’t want to travel to…..

So, basically, even if that information isn’t practical to my life at all, if it makes people view me as more intelligent, then I should spend time getting a grasp of it

He even went so far as to label me as β€œignorant” for not knowing this information about certain European countries (a part of the world that I’m not much interested in!)

I respectfully disagreed – but I did get very angry and resentful about his labeling of me as ignorant for not knowing impractical information

I have a very high opinion of myself, so working hard to impress others isn’t really high on my priority list

Actually, in person, I sometimes try to take the opposite approach and be more modest and less self-aggrandizing – because tooting your own horn too loudly is a great way to stir up envy and animosity

And I’ve basically NEVER had a client ask me questions about world geography and history

The vast majority of my consultation clients are extremely interested in getting money overseas and smashing foreign chicks, so that’s what we usually talk about

It’s possible I’ve lost potential clients by not seeming educated or worldly enough, but I’m mostly OK with that

I’ve got a loooong list of tasks and ideas for improving my business

And absorbing trivia to impress random jackasses is NOT on the list

Anyways…. what do you think? Do you care about people thinking that you aren’t smart for knowing about certain things?
